Graham Regional Medical Center Introduces High-Definition Endoscopy for Colorectal Cancer Screening
Graham, TX (8-15-06) – High-definition television (HDTV) is making its way from the living room to the medical operating room. Now, Graham Regional Medical Center is among the first hospitals in the region to introduce the technology as part of a new endoscope platform to screen patients for colorectal cancer, the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths for men and women combined in the U.S.

The new high-definition system gives the physicians at Graham Regional Medical Center a new endoscope platform, the world’s first to deliver both HDTV and Narrow Band Imaging™ (NBI) technologies. Called EVIS EXERA II ™, the 180 series developed by Olympus , provides doctors with enhanced observation capabilities, and has been shown to reduce overall procedure time when using the new 180 wide-angle scope. The HDTV signal from the video processor more than doubles the number of scan lines produced by conventional systems, offering doctors breathtaking images of the colon with a high level of detail and color.

The EVIS EXERA™ II 180 series of endoscopes features the widest ever field of view, superior ergonomics and ultra slim designs, the 180 series endoscopes provides enhanced diagnostic capabilities as well as improved efficiency.
The 180 series will be further enhanced with a new high-definition endoscope platform—the world’s first to deliver both high-definition TV (HDTV) and narrowband imaging (NBI) technologies.

High-definition TV delivers life-like images at 1080 lines, the HDTV signal from the new CV-180 video processor more than doubles the number of scan lines produced by conventional systems, when used in conjunction with the new high definition GIF-H180 gastroscope or CF-H180A/L colonoscope. The resulting life-like images will offer gastroenterologists especially clear views of anatomical structures and fine capillaries. The American Cancer Society (ACS) projects that colon and rectal cancer will kill 55,170 Americans this year. The ACS also points out that the 5-year survival rate for people whose colorectal cancer is treated in an early stage, before it has spread, is greater than 90%.
