How do I know if I have Diabetes?

Type 1 Diabetes is a disease in which the pancreas produces too little insulin to meet the body’s needs. It has symptoms that develop over a short amount of time and include such symptoms such as:
· Excessive hunger
· Excessive thirst
· Fatigue and weakness
· Increased amount & frequency of urination
· Infections of the skin, bladder or other areas
· Nausea & vomiting
· Visual impairments such as blurred vision
· Weight loss despite increased appetite and thirst
If you have one or more of these symptoms, check with your physician about testing for diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes is the most common type of diabetes with obesity being the main cause. Symptoms of Type 2 diabetes develop slowly over time & are not as noticeable as in Type I Diabetes. In addition to the symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes, you may experience:
· Dehydration
· Dry lips
· Sunken eyes
· Labored breathing
· Vomiting – abdominal distress
· Fruity-smelling breath

One in every three people has diabetes and does not know it. Ask your doctor if you suspect you could have this disease.

GRMC Diabetes Clinic will be here to help you take control.
